ALPHA HYDRAULIC DIGGINGS

The Alpha Hydraulic Diggings are situated one mile north of what was the town of Alpha through the California Gold Rush in 1850, but it is now close by the unincorporated town of Washington, California. The excavations became a registered California Historical Landmark (No. 628) on 1958-01-29. The plate's inscription reads:

ALPHA AND OMEGA

The town of Alpha and Omega was just one mile from here which is named by the gold miners in the early 1850s. The incredible hydraulic diggings were visible from near this point, overwhelmed nearly all the original town sites. Opera singer Emma Nevada's birth place was alpha. Mining at Omega persisted till 1949 and bumbling functions are done there today. (1958).
