Manganese

Definition

Manganese is a chemical component, elected by the symbol Mn. It has the atomic number 25. It is create as a free component in nature, and in many minerals. As a free element, manganese is a metal with vital industrial metal alloy uses, particularly in stainless steels.

Properties

Manganese is a gray–white metal, similar to iron. It is a solid metal and is very brittle, fusible with difficulty, but easily oxidized. Manganese metal and its common ions are paramagnetic

Application

Manganese is important to iron and steel manufacture by good quality of its sulfur-fixing, deoxidizing, and alloying properties. Steelmaking, as well as its ironmaking component, has accounted for most manganese demand, currently in the range of 85% to 90% of the total demand. Among a selection of other uses, manganese is a key constituent of low-cost stainless steel formulations.
