Company Description

The Geita Gold Mine is an open pit gold mine located in the Geita District of the Mwanza Region of Tanzania. It is operated by AngloGold Ashanti. In 2008, the mine accounted for 6% of the companys overall annual gold production and employed close to 3,200 people.

The Geita mine commenced production in 2000, initially as a joint venture of AngloGold and Ashanti. With the merger of the two companies in 2004, the mine became fully owned by AngloGold Ashanti. The mine was inaugurated by then-Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa, who pledged more incentives for investments in the sector. But the opening of the mine also raised fears within environmentalists from Tanzania and Uganda that its closeness to Lake Victoria, 20 kilometres away, could cause further environmental damage to the already affected water system. Unlike the North Mara Gold Mine, where a spill caused extremely high levels of arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, copper, chrome, nickel and zinc at the area around, at Geita the situation was found to be less acute. But at Geita, too, higher than natural levels of arsenic and other metals in sediments were found.

Geita Gold Mine (GGM) is a gold mining company located in Tanzania, Africa. It is a subsidiary of AngloGold Ashanti, a South African gold mining company. GGM is the largest single gold mining operation in Tanzania, producing a significant portion of the country's gold.

GGM operates in a very remote area of Tanzania, located in the Lake Victoria Goldfields, about 90 kilometers from Mwanza. The mine is located in the Geita District, in the Mwanza Region of Tanzania. GGM was established in 2000, and currently employs over 4,500 people, making it one of the largest employers in the region. The gold mine is owned by AngloGold Ashanti, which holds a 55% stake in the mine, while the government of Tanzania holds the remaining 45%. GGM is one of the largest gold producers in Africa, and the largest single gold producer in Tanzania. The mine produces around 1.3 million ounces of gold per year, and is expected to reach a production rate of 1.5 million ounces in 2021.

GGM is committed to responsible mining and protecting the environment. The company has implemented a number of initiatives to reduce its environmental impact, including the use of clean energy sources, waste management, and water conservation. The company also works closely with local communities to ensure that the benefits of its operations are shared and that the environment is protected.

GGM is committed to creating a safe and healthy work environment for its employees. The company has implemented a number of safety and health initiatives, including the use of personal protective equipment, health and safety training, and the provision of medical services.

GGM is an important part of Tanzania's economy, and its operations are a major contributor to the country's GDP. The company's operations have also had a positive impact on the local economy, creating jobs and providing economic opportunities for local communities.
