Indian Rare Earths Limited (IREL) is a government-owned corporation in India based in Mumbai. It was incorporated as a private limited company and jointly owned by the Government of India and Government of Travancore Cochin.

Indian Rare Earths Limited (IREL) is a public sector enterprise of the Government of India and is under the administrative control of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). It was established in 1950 with the primary objective of commercializing the technology for the recovery of rare earths from beach sand minerals. IREL is engaged in the mining and processing of minerals like monazite, ilmenite, rutile, zircon, sillimanite and garnet.

IREL has two main divisions, namely Mineral Exploration & Processing and Refining & Rare Earths. The Mineral Exploration & Processing Division is responsible for conducting exploration activities and processing of beach sand minerals to recover rare earths. The Refining & Rare Earths Division is responsible for refining and production of rare earths, thorium and other associated products. IREL has three operating units located in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Odisha. The Chavara plant in Kerala is dedicated to the production of heavy mineral concentrates. The Manavalakurichi plant in Tamil Nadu is involved in the mining, separation and beneficiation of beach sand minerals. The Odisha Sand Complex in Odisha is involved in the mining and beneficiation of beach sand minerals.

IREL also has a Research and Development Centre at Aluva in Kerala. This centre is involved in research and development activities in the areas of mineral processing, rare earths and thorium processing, radio-chemistry, waste management and other related activities.

IREL is one of the leading producers of rare earths in the world and is the only organization in India to undertake the entire range of activities in the rare earths industry, from exploration, mining and mineral separation to refining and production of rare earths and allied products. It has a wide range of products which include rare earth oxides, rare earth metals, rare earth compounds, thorium compounds and other related products.
