Rio Tinto has awarded Civmec, an Australian engineering and construction firm, with a contract worth over $228 million (AUD) for work on the Western Range iron ore project in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The contract covers the construction of process facilities, non-process infrastructure, and associated works. The Western Range project is part of Rio Tinto’s broader Pilbara mine expansion program, which involves the development of new iron ore mines, as well as increasing the production capacity of existing mines. The project is expected to add up to 20 million tonnes of additional capacity to Rio Tinto’s Pilbara operations. Civmec’s scope of work includes construction of a multi-deck stockyard, a car dumper, a storage shed, and a transfer station.
In addition, the company will construct a series of conveyor systems and a new rail loop, as well as other non-process infrastructure. Civmec CEO Pat Tallon said the company is proud to be part of the project and is looking forward to working with Rio Tinto to deliver the best possible outcomes. The Western Range project is expected to be completed by the second half of 2021.
